Locking and unlocking assignments

If you would like to specify when students are able to submit answers or take notes on an assignment, you can do this using the lock and unlock feature. Lock/unlock periods can be set for the entire class, or for individual students. Note: Even during locked periods, students will still be able to access the assignment in a read-only mode.

When you schedule an assignment to lock in the future, the assignment will automatically lock students out at that time. When an assignment is locked, students will not be able to add additional notes or answer questions, until the assignment is unlocked again.

When you schedule an assignment to unlock in the future, the assignment will unlock at that time, allowing students to take notes and submit answers.

Lock an Assignment

STEP 1: Select the class your assignment is in from your class list. Then click on the "Assignments" tab.

STEP 2: Click on the "LOCK/UNLOCK" button, and select "Manage locking" from the drop-down menu.

STEP 3: Select the assignment you'd like to lock.

STEP 4: Set your lock period start date.

The Lock Start defaults to the current date/time. To set the lock period to start in the future, use the dropdown to schedule the start date and time. After selecting the start date/time for the lock period, select "Apply".

STEP 5: Click "Lock"

This will Lock the assignment for the entire class. Detailed instructions for setting lock periods for individual students are below.

Verify Lock status

When an assignment is locked, a pink lock icon will appear on the assignment tile. Hovering over the icon displays the lock start date, as well as the end date, if one is set.

Note: Even during locked periods, students will still be able to access the assignment in a read-only mode.

Unlock a locked assignment

STEP 1: Click on the "LOCK/UNLOCK" button, and select "Manage unlocking" from the drop-down menu.

STEP 2: Select the text that you wish to remove unlock, or set an unlock period for.

STEP 4: Set your unlock period start date.

The Unlock Start defaults to the current date/time. To set the unlock period to start in the future, use the dropdown to schedule the start date and time. After selecting the start date/time for the lock period, select "Apply".

STEP 5: Click "Set Unlock"

This will unlock the assignment for the entire class. Detailed instructions for setting lock/unlock periods for individual students are below.

Verify Lock status (for unlock periods starting in the future)

If you set an unlock period to start in the future, the assignment will be locked until that date. For assignments with future unlock dates, a pink lock icon will appear on the assignment tile. Hovering over the icon displays the unlock start date.

To lock for individual students

After specifying a lock/unlock time (see above), select “Individual students” to apply those lock/unlock periods for individual students.

A list of the students in that class will appear. Select the students you would like the lock/unlock period to apply to, and click "Lock" (or "Unlock" if setting unlock periods).

Schedule a lock period

If you specify a future start date and end date for your assignment to be locked, the assignment will be unlocked until the start date/time, and unlocked after the end date/time.

To set a lock period, follow the steps for locking an assignment above, and use the start and end dates to specify when your assignment should be locked.

Example: This assignment would be locked from Jan 1 2018 until Jan 10 2018, and students would not be able to add notes or respond to questions between Jan 1 and Jan 10.

Schedule an unlock period

If you specify a window of time when the assignment should be unlocked, the assignment will be locked until the start date/time, and unlocked after the end date/time.

To specify a window of time when an assignment should be unlocked, follow the steps for unlocking assignments above, and use the start and end dates to specify when your assignment should be unlocked.

Example: This assignment would be unlocked between Aug 1 and Aug 7, 2017. This means that students will not be able to add notes or respond to questions until Aug 1, and they will be locked out again on Aug 7.
