During Reading Workshop, students practice reading comprehension strategies with a variety of texts.
Goal: Increase reading comprehension through modeling and independent practice
Thinking about using Actively Learn for Reading Workshop? Here are some tips:
- Create Book Clubs or reading groups where students select a shared text to read from Actively Learn’s catalog. Assign the selected texts for group members to read during independent reading, and encourage them create annotations to share their ideas about the text. This builds engagement and creates opportunities for small group instruction during conferences.
- Embed notes and questions throughout texts students read on Actively Learn that highlight the learning objective or mid-workshop teaching point.
- To accelerate students’ growth in writing about reading, provide scaffolds (guiding prompts, sentence frames, etc.) within questions and encourage students to revise responses based on feedback.
