How to Use the Writing Assistant

The Writing Assistant is an AI-powered feature available on short answer questions within Actively Learn. This article walks you through the steps to customize its settings. Specifically, you'll learn how to turn the Writing Assistant on or off and choose a feedback option.

This guide provides instructions for three key settings:

1. Turning the Writing Assistant on or off at different levels, including:
   • Student level
   • Question level
   • Assignment level

2. Disabling the Writing Assistant for a school or district:

   • To turn off the Writing Assistant at the school or district level, an administrator can contact the Support team by emailing support@activelylearn.com.

3. Choosing between two feedback delivery options:
   • Review Feedback First (instructor reviews feedback before sending it to students)
   • Automatically Send Feedback (feedback is sent directly to students without instructor review).

1. Turning the Writing Assistant On/Off

Turn the Writing Assistant on/off at the Student Level

Teachers can enable or disable the Writing Assistant for individual students.

1. Navigate to the roster page
2. Locate the Writing Assistant Toggle
3. Turn On/Off

At the Question Level

The Writing Assistant can be enabled or disabled for specific questions within an assignment.

1. Click Edit on a Short Answer Question
2. Locate the Writing Assistant Toggle

At the Assignment Level

Teachers can enable or disable the Writing Assistant for an entire assignment.

1. Teachers can set assignment settings during the assign flow using the dropdown or update settings for existing assignments via the three-dot icon on the assignment tile.

2. Choosing Feedback Options

The Writing Assistant offers two feedback modes:

Option 1: Review Feedback First:

In the Assignment Settings, select "Review Feedback First" under the Writing Assistant. This mode allows instructors to review the Writing Assistant’s feedback before it is sent to students.

Option 2: Automatically Send Feedback

In the Assignment Settings, select "Automatically Send Feedback" under the Writing Assistant. This mode sends Writing Assistant feedback directly to students without instructor review.
