Actively Learn offers several different methods to roster classes and add students to your classes. It is up to teachers to create and/or import their classes and roster their students. Teachers can create their own "native" classes in Actively Learn and have students join with a class code. Or, teachers can integrate their accounts with Google Classroom, Clever, or an LTI (Canvas, Schoology), and import classes into their account from those integrations.
Please note that your school's choice for rostering, single sign on or Student Information System (SIS), has no impact on whether your account is on Prime. If you are having trouble connecting your account to your school's prime plan, click here for our check prime status article.
Note on using multiple integrations: As long as the student's email is the same across all of the school or district's integrations, it does not matter how the student logins to Actively Learn and they should see their teacher's class regardless. If the student's email is different between integrations (ex. different emails for Google and Clever accounts), then the student will need to login through the correct integration to join their teacher's class.
Rostering Classes
Native
Teachers can create their own classes directly in Actively Learn. Native classes have not been imported from any integration, but created using our + Add New Class button. Actively Learn classes will have a class code and students can use this code to join their class. Students are still required to sign up and make an Actively Learn account to join a teacher's class. Click here for our help article that goes over how to create a native class.
Students can join with a code as they are signing up or, if they already have an account, they can join with the class code at any time. Click here for our help article that goes over how a student can join a class with a class code.
Google Classroom
If teachers connect their account with Google Classroom, then they can import their classes through Google Classroom. Click here for our help article that goes over how to import your Google classes and sync your class rosters with Google.
Teachers will need to remember to sync their class rosters with Google Classroom in Actively Learn, before having students login. If you need to make any changes to your class roster, you will need to first make those changes in Google Classroom, then re-sync the class roster in Actively Learn. Click here for our help article that goes over how to sync/re-sync your google class roster with Google Classroom.
Students can join your imported Google Classroom classes by going to our main login page and logging in with their school or district email. Students can also click on the assignment link in your Google Classroom, and this will ask students to login to Actively Learn. After students login through the assignment link, they will automatically be taken to the assignment in your class in Actively Learn.
Keep in mind, our Google Classroom integration is a one way sync with classes and rosters. This means only classes and rosters will sync from Google Classroom to Actively Learn. Teachers cannot create classes in Actively Learn and sync them to Google Classroom.
Clever
Teachers can integrate their account with Clever, by logging into Actively Learn through their school's Clever portal. This is true for students as well, if they would like to login through Clever. After the teachers' account is connected to Clever, they will need to manually import their Clever classes. Click here for our help article that goes over how to import your Clever classes.
When teachers import their Clever classes, the rosters will have all of their students listed and they will be grayed out. Once students start logging in, they will see their Clever classes and their student information will appear bold in the class roster. Click here for our help article that goes over how teachers and students can login to Actively Learn with Clever.
-
- How do you deal with updates in our SIS (ex. PowerSchool updates)?
- When students login, we detect which classes they are a part of and which classes they have been removed from and update the data in Actively Learn accordingly.
- When teachers login, we do a similar check
- If a teacher wants to remove students without waiting for them to login, we have a “Remove Students” button they can click in the Roster. This will outline the students no longer in the class, in a red box. Then, It’s up to the teacher to move them within AL.
- Do you have an automatic nightly sync?
- No, we pull data (that’s shared with us) on-demand when teachers and students log in.
- How do you deal with updates in our SIS (ex. PowerSchool updates)?
Keep in mind, our Clever integration is a one way sync with classes and rosters. This means only classes and rosters will sync from Clever to Actively Learn. Teachers cannot create classes in Actively Learn and sync them to Clever.
LTI (Canvas/Schoology)
Roster with Canvas
After a teacher integrates their account with Canvas, they will need to import their classes into their account. Click here for more information on how to import your Canvas classes. When teachers import their Canvas classes, the rosters will have all of their students listed and they will appear grayed out. Once students start logging into Actively Learn, they will see their Canvas class and their information will be bold in the Canvas Class roster. Click here on how students can login into Actively Learn through Canvas.
Roster with Schoology
After a teacher integrates their account with Schoology, they will need to import their classes into their account. Click here for more information on how to import your Schoology classes. When teachers import their Schoology classes, the rosters will have all of their students listed and they will appear grayed out. Once students start logging into Actively Learn, they will see their Schoology class and their information will be bold in the Schoology Class roster. Click here on how students can login into Actively Learn through Schoology.
Logging in vs. Rostering classes
How a teacher logins to Actively Learn does not have to determine how they roster their classes. For example, a teacher could login through Google and import their classes from Google Classroom into their account. Then, they can login through Clever and import their Clever classes into their account. As long as the email is the same for both their Google and Clever account, then they can login through either method.
When they login through either method, they should be able to see all of the classes they have imported so far. If a teacher needs to update the roster for a certain class, they need to make sure they login through the integration that the class is connected to. If they need to update a google class, they should login through google, etc.
Integrations do not sync together. For example, if a teacher has Clever and Google Classroom classes, they will not be able to sync Clever classes to Google Classroom through Actively Learn or vice versa . This is the same for all integrations on Actively Learn.
